Christmas Eve is a very exciting time for small children! When it's time to go to bed they are all fired up and probably don't want to go to sleep. 

A Calling Santa ceremony is a good way to transition them, to let them tell Santa that they are ready for him to come. I grew up with the cookies and milk tradition; when all was ready, we would pour a glass of milk and leave it and 2 cookies on a plate (1 for Santa + 1 for Rudolph). In the morning, of course the cookies and milk would be gone. 

So here is an updated tradition for you to consider:

The tradition starts with each of the children ringing the handbell, and speaking their own message aloud to Santa Claus. They leave the Sleigh Bell, and the Solid Pewter Key, for Santa.

The Magic Key is for Santa, because the key allows him to magically unlock your door so he can get in. The sleigh bell is for Santa to hang on the tree, for proof of his visit (like the cookies being eaten). That part was always so satisfying, as a child...
