About The Artisan
Kiku Handmade is Laurie Freivogel’s glass studio located outside Chicago. A life-long artist, she discovered the indie craft movement that was growing in Chicago and had an epiphany: fused glass.
After learning the basics of glass fusing she started incorporating her love of silk screening and that is when the magic happened.
Using fine enamels, she prints with multiple screens onto layers of glass to create depth and, using a knack for color and composition, pairs it with an amazing glass color palette.
Her imagery and drawings are primarily inspired by pop culture, pattern and nature. She particularly loves mid-century modern and Japanese design aesthetics, in fact the name "Kiku" means "chrysanthemum" in Japanese.
The results are spectacular, beautiful works of everyday art.
“While my work is very graphic, I'm a practical girl so most of my pieces are as functional as they are pretty.”
